There is a lot of info in this guide, hang on tight! Staff has compiled a compendium of information for players to reference while roleplaying on VATONAGE. Click on the tabs below to switch between different sections.[break][break]
[PTabbedContent][PTab=Characters]Characters on VATONAGE have occupations, known as classes. Classes come with ranks. The list of available, non-special classes are Ranger, Trainer, Warden, and Galactic. Wardens are a unique class on VATONAGE, and are a combination of a Trainer and a Ranger. The Galactic class is a sub-section of the Trainer class, but comes with its own set of ranks! This class is for Team Galactic members, who are all Trainers by default.[break][break]
In addition to your character's class and rank, they can choose to take up a side occupation. This would be the more traditional jobs, like Pokémon Breeder, farmer, florist, miner, fisherman, etc. This won't do anything to any stats, it's simply a roleplaying choice!
For information on how to rank up your character and the requirements, check out this thread!
[/PTab]
[PTab=Pokémon]Due to its proximity to the Sinnoh region, Pokémon in Almia are mostly Sinnohan. Kantonian, Hoennian, and Johtoan Pokémon can also be found in Almia, although they are not quite as common. Pokémon from Unova, Kalos, Alola, and Galar are significantly more rare, as those regions are not close by. Some flying and aquatic Pokémon from those outside regions have traveled closer to Almia, but primarily, those regional Pokémon can only be found with well-traveled Trainers.[break][break]
Almia has no region-exclusive Pokémon, and no regional forms. Mega Evolution has not yet found its way to Almia, nor has Z-Power, and Gigamaxing and related forms are exclusive to the Galar region. Hisuian Pokémon are ancient, and also do not exist in Almia or Sinnoh.[break][break]
Please note that the below lists are simply the rarities of wild Pokémon. They cannot all be found in every area in Almia. For a list of Pokémon locations, click the "Location" tab above.[break][break]

[PTab=Mechanics]
The mechanics on VATONAGE take inspiration from the main games, but are not entirely true-to-form. We utilize dice here in a similar way to Dungeons & Dragons, if you are at all familiar with that![break][break]
This section is broken up further into more sections, because we've got a lot of ground to cover. Let's go![break]
[PTabbedContent][PTab=Capture]Capturing Pokémon for Rangers, Trainers, and Wardens is the same to keep things simple, it's just how the character utilizes the Pokémon afterwards that changes.[break][break]
When capturing a Pokémon, you must roll a D10 using the dice roller function located on the right side of the posting box. Click on the dice image, type in "1-10", and insert.[break][break]
It's important that the number you roll is visible in your post! No cheating![break][break]
If you roll a…[break]
1 - critical fail. It went terribly! The Pokémon escaped![break]
2-5 - fail, try again![break]
6-9 - success![break]
10 - critical success. It went amazingly! The Pokémon is now your best friend![break][break]
Of course, it is up to the player to roleplay out how the encounter happens, and what goes wrong--or right–depending on the number rolled. Feel free to be creative, but keep it reasonable and realistic.[break][break]
An example post of how to use and document the capture roll:[break]
[/PTab] [PTab=Battling and Assists]
Here on VATONAGE, stats are largely disregarded for battling. Battling functions more like how it does in the Pokémon anime, with moves being roleplayed out and dodges up to the discretion of the player. That being said, Staff encourages that everyone play fairly as per the rules of the site! Any excessive dodging or powerplaying will cause a battle to be intervened. Everyone wants their Pokémon to win, but sometimes that just doesn't happen![break][break]
The only stat that is somewhat used is Speed, and that is taken from the Pokémon's base speed stat. This is only used to see who moves first in a battle. In the case of Pokémon having the same Speed stat, we'll roll a dice or flip a coin to decide![break][break]
For moves, it is still one move per turn, one turn per post. Simple enough![break][break]
On VATONAGE, Pokémon are allowed 4 moves until level 25, 5 moves until level 50, 6 moves until level 75, 7 moves until level 100, and 8 moves upon reaching level 100.[break][break]
For status conditions, all conditions that don't go away on their own (like Sleep and Confusion) must be healed with an item. Otherwise, they last 5 turns.[break][break]
The formula for calculating damage here on VATO is as follows:[break]
STAB means "same-type attack bonus", and it is equal to your Pokémon's level. If you're using a Grass-type move with a Grass-type Pokémon, you get STAB![break]
Effectiveness is how effective an attack is, whether it be super-effective (SE), normal (N), resisted (R), or immune (I).[break][break]
Weather adds a x2 bonus to damage depending on the move type. For example, Sunny Day boosts the power of Fire-type moves. If there is no bonus, this would be x1.[break][break]
You don't have to use this template, it's just one that Staff has created to keep up with battle posts, and is the one we'll be using in our NPC posts. If you find something that works better for you, that's fine! Just make sure it still includes the Pokémon's level, Ability, EXP, HP, and moveset. An image is also optional, but please put the Pokémon's name in the post if there's no picture.
Template:[break]
Example:[break]
[break]
BULBASAUR[break]
Lvl. 05[break]
65/65 HP[break]
[00/72 EXP][break]
Ability: Overgrow[break]
Tackle | Growl | Vine Whip | empty[break][break]
Assists work in VATONAGE similarly to how they work in the games. This function is for Rangers and Wardens only![break][break]
Every Pokémon has a type, and each type works to combat another type! For example, if capturing a Water-type Pokémon, you would use a Grass-type Pokémon to aid in the capture and grow grass to slow the other Pokémon down.[break][break]
[break][break]
Slowed: Pokémon's movement slows down, and it is less likely to attack.[break]
Stopped: Pokémon stops in place for a moment.[break]
Paralyzed: Pokémon cannot move at all for a moment.[break][break]
These work similarly to Assists, in that a Ranger or Warden gets help from a Pokémon to clear something away out in the field. For example, if a fallen tree blocks the path, a Ranger could get help from a Scyther to cut the tree down and make space.[break][break]
Target Clears aren't based on any mechanics necessarily, they're simply something Rangers and Wardens need to learn how to do. It's important that the type of help needed matches the Pokémon's type or skill in some way. It's not realistic for a Charmander to use Water Gun to put out a fire![break][break]
It is also based on the power of the Pokémon. A Squirtle could put out a small fire with its Water Gun, but it couldn't put out a whole forest fire because it's not strong enough. It'll be up to you, the player, to provide reasonable ways for a Pokémon to complete a Target Clear through roleplaying. If it's something too outrageous, though, Staff will intervene![break][break]
Also remember, once a Ranger uses a Pokémon for an Assist or a Target Clear, the Pokémon is immediately released and goes back to its home! You don't get to keep the Pokémon forever, sorry!
[/PTab] [PTab=EXP and Leveling]
Who's ready to do some more math?![break][break]
EXP on VATONAGE is a bit different than in the games, because we're using a written medium. To start, here are the EXP rules:[break][break]
You get +10 EXP per every 100 words you write. Easy enough, right? Now let's get more funky.[break]
For Battle and Capture EXP, the formula for WINNING is: WC (for all BATTLE/CAPTURE posts only) + (WC/2) × 1.5. This is for ALL Pokémon involved in the battle, or all Pokémon in your Party if you have the EXP. Share. Here's an example.[break][break]
VATONAGE uses the Fast leveling formula for ALL Pokémon, it's easier that way. Don't know what this means? Check out this link.[break][break]

THE CLASSES
Ranger
Rangers are the peacekeepers of Almia. They utilize devices known as Capture Stylers to befriend Pokémon, and use those Pokémon to aid civilians, protect other Pokémon, defeat bad guys, and destroy obstacles. They are accompanied by one primary Pokémon, their Partner, with whom they share a special bond with. Once a Friend Pokémon's services have been used, the Ranger releases the Pokémon to go free, back to its home.[break][break]
Rangers must attend the Ranger School outside of Vientown before they can become official Rangers. Ranger Students are not able to have Partner Pokémon, and can only befriend three Pokémon at one time. Once they have graduated from the School, Rangers can adopt a Partner, and take along five additional Friend Pokémon.[break][break]
Rangers do not participate in battles like Trainers. They protect nature, Pokémon, and the people of Almia, and are the sole law enforcement in the region.

Trainer
Migrating to Almia from the nearby Sinnoh region and beyond, Trainers are your standard Pokémon wranglers. They capture Pokémon to raise and train, and participate in battles against other Trainers to level up their Pokémon. They utilize Pokéballs to catch and keep Pokémon in. Most Trainers aim to compete in the Badge Challenge, which is a new endeavor in Almia. Eight Gym Leaders, eight badges, all to reach the Elite Four. If the Elite Four and the current reigning Champion is defeated, a new Champion arises. This, for many Trainers, is their lifelong dream. Other Trainers have been recruited by Pokémon Professors to hunt for every known Pokémon and gather information, storing it in a Pokédex.[break][break]
Trainers can only hold six Pokémon with them at any given time, known as their Party. All other captured Pokémon are digitally stored in the Trainer's PC, and can be removed, swapped, and arranged via any computer. Trainers can also trade Pokémon with other Trainers.[break][break]
Trainers cannot use Capture Stylers, as they are not trained on the technique and may break the devices accidentally.

Warden
With the rise of Trainers in Almia came a new class: Wardens. Trainers with an interest in befriending Pokémon, or Rangers with an interest in the Badge Challenge, end up cross-training and becoming Wardens. Although not officially recognized by the Ranger Union, Wardens are capable of using both Pokéballs and Capture Stylers, and have developed their own techniques for raising Pokémon. Typically Good Samaritans, Wardens often help Rangers and Trainers alike in the field.[break][break]
While originally frowned upon by "true" Rangers, Wardens have become a rapidly growing class, and are making a name for themselves in Almia. Within the last 10 years, Wardens have been able to attend the Ranger School, and are given special training. Old-school Rangers may look upon Wardens with disdain, but Wardens and new-school Rangers are always happy to work with and learn from each other.[break][break]
Wardens can only utilize six Pokémon in the field at any one time. One Partner, and five Party members. Unlike Rangers, when Wardens get help from a Party Pokémon, that Pokémon stays with the Warden. Wardens can also store extra Pokémon in PCs.[break][break]
The Wardens have no official group or organization as of yet, but some young upstarts are working towards developing their own organization...

Team Galactic
Also migrating down from the more northern Sinnoh region, Team Galactic members are no-good, dirty crooks. They are often apprehended and arrested by Rangers for stealing and abusing Pokémon, as they are not particularly good at being discreet about their law-breaking. Team Galactic members are Trainers, loosely, and use Pokémon in the same way that traditional Trainers do, but are usually more focused on the Team's overarching goals than the Badge Challenge.[break][break]
Having been chased out of Sinnoh, the Team immigrated to the next closest region, Almia, and established a new base there. The location of this, they actually do keep a secret, as well as the reasonings behind their Pokémon-stealing. It is rumored that Team Galactic has something to do with the missing Legendary Pokémon, although the Ranger Union thus far has been unable to figure out what exactly they're doing.[break][break]
Galactic members are heavily mistrusted, and must conceal their involvement in the Team if they ever want to properly take the Badge Challenge.

{Common} The most common Pokémon around. Typically low-level, and at the lowest levels of their evolution lines.
{Uncommon Pokémon}Uncommon Pokémon are typically mid-level or in the middle stages of their evolution lines. Still relatively common, especially in wild areas.
{Rare Pokémon}Rare Pokémon are much harder to find in the wild, and are typically high levels or at the last stages of their evolution lines. Starter Pokémon are classified as rare because there are not many of them, especially ones from other regions outside Sinnoh.
{Ultra Rare Pokémon}Ultra Rare Pokémon are extremely rare in the wild, and are almost always found with experienced Trainers instead, having been raised to their final evolutions. They are high leveled and hard to catch.
{Uncatchable Pokémon}These Pokémon do not naturally exist in the wild, or cannot be captured at all. Most Fossil Pokémon are in this category. Legendary Pokémon and Mythical Pokémon are exceedingly rare and cannot be caught.
